Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of urea as an N source for sawi the most widely grown leaf vegetable in Malaysia. Results obtained showed no significant difference in yield between urea and ammonium sulphate. The mean yield obtained on sand-tailing was 2.2 kg/plot with urea and 2.3 kg/plot with ammonium sulphate. The mean yield obtained on clay soil was 3.3 kg/plot with urea and 3.5 kg/plot with ammonium sulphate. Comparison of an urea Nbased compound and an ammonium N nitrate N-based compound on sawi grown on a clay loam soil also showed no significant yield differences. Mean yield obtained with the urea N- based compound was 6.5 kg/plot compared to 6.2 kg/plot with the ammonium Nnitrate N-based compound. It is concluded that urea and urea based compounds are suitable for sawi production if the fertilizer applied is buried as was done in this study.
