Abstract

Hopea odorata family Dipterocarpaceae. produces a timber classified as medium hardwood and has been recommended as one of the plantation species. Besides its economic use to produce logs it is now widely used as an ornamental and shade tree in urban areas. Its beautiful cone-shaped crown makes it a popular landscape tree. Unlike many other dipteroearp species H. odorata can be planted outside its natural habitat and can thrive well in open areas. The species is hardy and easily adaptable to various sites and conditions. It is a fast-growing species and is able to tolerate harsh urban environment. This species can be propagated by seed and cuttings. Germination tests showed that the seeds germinate within three weeks. With fresh and matured seeds the germination percentage can be 80 to 90. The species can also be propagated by single-node leafy cuttings using juvenile materials obtained either from young seedlings or coppice shoots. The percentage rooting can be more than 70 depending on the type of material used.
