Abstract

This work deals with the different dipterocarp forest types found in the nature reserve of Binh Chall in Xuyen Moc District Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province/South Vietnam. These forests and those in the eastern part of South Vietnam are the most interesting and diverse forest areas still remaining in South Vietnam. This paper also focuses on the distribution of Dipterocarpus caudatus ssp. caudatus and its resin utilisation. The study area is along the coast of the South China Sea; the vegetation is diverse with a dominance of deciduous forest types and dipterocarps typical for dry forest. Permanent plots in this study were the first plots established in Vietnam for collecting diameter increment data. Human activities were also observed to have severe negative impacts on the conservation of the protected area. Data were collected through direct interviews with the local communities living around the reserve.
