Abstract

A trial planting of Hopea odorata or merawan siput jantan on poorly drained soil was established in Sungai Cham plantation in Kuantan Pahang. The soil with a high clay and silt content hardens during the dry season and is waterlogged during the wet period. Observations made two years after planting showed that application of NPK fertilizers improved the growth of the trees planted. Height and diameter increments of the trees increased with the higher rate of fertilizer applied. Variations in wood density were also observed among different fertilizer treatments.
