Abstract
Pineapple is still one of the most important fruit commodities in Malaysia contributing about RM100 million a year in foreign exchange earnings amounting to 5 of the world production of canned pineapple. Paratylenchus sp. has been identified as the nematode associated with the yield decline of pineapple var. Gandul. The effect of natural fallow and clean fallow were evaluated with respect to the population in the soil. It was observed that keeping the land fallow can result in decrease in nematode population. Nematode population on natural fallow plot after burning of previous crop pineapple stumps not removed and no weed control resulted in nematode population of 25 121 and 17 per 200 ml soil at 3 6 and 9 months after natural fallow respectively. Nematode population on clean fallow plot after burning of previous crop pineapple stumps and roots removed and weeds controlled by chemicals resulted in nematode population of 25 125 and 0 per 200 ml soil at 3 6 and 9 months after clean fallow respectively. In control plots where pineapple was immediately planted after burning of the previous crop the nematode population was recorded at 666 nematodes per 200ml soil. This may indicate that leaving the plot fallow for a certain period of time or rotating with a non-host crop will help reduce the nematode population in the soil.
