Bains Balkar S., . (2007) Prudent and prophylactic antimicrobial poultry feed medication remains an option. [Proceedings Paper]
Abstract
This paper expresses an overview to highlight the necessity to be vigilant in determining the need to control and regulate the use of prophylactic antimicrobials in poultry feed. The regulatory authorities has the responsibility to measure all criteria in determining the current need against emotional or biased opinions expressed at times. The controversy on the use of or not for antimicrobials in Europe has been overshadowed by applying the so called ;Precautionary Principle; which aimed to end the technical arguments. On the other hand North America applied the so called ;Principle of Proof; that would require the support of technical data before any restriction for the use of antimicrobials be applied. In some countries the so called ;Prudent Use Principle; has been used which permits the use of specific antimicrobials under regulated and approved authority and supervision of a qualified professional. It is possible that some time in the future there would be alternatives available that could replace the currently used antimicrobials but in the foreseeable future ;Prudent Use Principle; does offer a choice for all practical purposes.
