Abstract

Malaysia is one of the world;s oldest rainforest and has vast biodiversity with 1200 species of identified medicinal herbs. Although the domestic herbal industry is still at its infancy stage there is an increasing demand for herbal-based products in which this gap is currently being fulfilled by importation of herbal products including raw materials from abroad. The herbal market is presently worth billions and is projected to increase annually. The key factors for this is due to the changes in society;s lifestyle and health-awareness as well as the increasing costs of synthetic chemical-based medicines and their side-effects. Advances in research and development particularly in biotechnology and information technology are one of the key elements that can and will drive the industry to the next level of commercialization phase.
