Abstract

Flavonoids are polyphenolic compounds that are ubiquitous in nature. Over 4000 flavonoids have been identified many of which occur in fruits vegetables and beverages. The flavonoids have aroused considerable interest recently because of their potential effect on human health. They have been reported to have antiprotozoal activity beside other activities such as antiviral anti-allergic antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. The aim of this study was to investigate flavonoids from our compound library for antitrypanosomal activity. A total of nine flavonoid isolated from C. odorata were evaluated against Trypanosoma brucei brucei using Alamar blue assay. Three flavonoids eriodictyol7 4;-dimethyl ether quercetin-7-methyl ether rhamnetin and kaempferol-4;methyl ether showed moderate activity against the parasite with IC‚‚ values 6.60 0.05 g/ml 9.42 0.30 g/ml and 10.22 1.02 g/ml respectively. These compounds further showed selectivity index SI values of 1.2 0.5 and 1.3 towards the parasite.
