Abstract

Traditional medication is an integral part of Malaysian culture and has been practiced by various ethnic groups before the introduction of the modern medicine system into the country. Albeit undocumented much knowledge still remains amongst the various ethnic groups and passed from one generation to another via oral. Forest plants species have many traditional claims in treatment of many diseases. In the evaluation of traditional claims scientific research is important. We report the anti-MRSA and anti-cancer potential against a group of human cancer cell lines HT-29 SKOV-3 and MCF-7 of ethanol and water extracts of Oryxilum indicum Bridelia tomentosa Macaranga tanarius Lawsonia inermis and Senna alata. Among the extracts tested ethanol extracts of M. tanarius shows noticeable anti-MRSA activity. Simultaneously the presence of moderate antiproliferative activity was noted in ethanol and water extract of O. indicum and ethanol extract of M. tanarius.
