Abstract

Arenga pinnata Merr. is a feather palm native to tropical Asia commonly known as sugar palm arenga palm areng palm gomuti palm aren irok or kaong. A. pinnata is very much sought after for its sweet sap or gula aren -a local delicacy of the people in Asia. The microbial load analysis indicated higher microbial content in sap harvested by rubbing the stalk than without. Similarly the jerricans washed using river water showed mixed bacterial growth when compared to treated water washed jerrican. Anti-diabetic assay conducted using a-amylase showed positive inhibition by the A. pinnata sap. The sap syrup and powder however did not inhibit bacterial growth.
