Abstract
Scent components are of great commercial importance in various applications of volatiles in science and industry especially the perfumery industry. Flower scents of rare species of plants are potential sources of new aroma volatiles and chemistry. We utilized a close to nature method of ;capturing; floral volatiles using the headspace analysis. This is a non-destructive approach that allows the scents emitted by living plants to be captured in a quality as perceived by the human nose. The flower scent is captured in a glass chamber while it is intact with the rest of the plant. The emitted volatiles bind to a polymer mesh as the air in the glass chamber is continually purged via a pump. After a fixed period of time the volatiles bound to the polymer are extracted with an organic solvent and analyzed using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry GC/MS. An example of a scent trapping experiment is illustrated in this paper. This method can be used to analyze composition of new aromatics by identifying novel molecules that may be applied as suitable perfumery ingredients
