Abstract

A purified compound Andrographolide AG and two crude extracts Goniothalamus GMUS and Manjakani MJKN are plant samples previously reported to have medicinal properties such as in hepatomegaly abortifacient and postnatal astringent effects respectively. In addition they were all reported to have potential anti-cancer effects against cancer cell lines in vitro. The aim of this study was to assess the genotoxic potential of these extracts along with a positive control ethylmethane sulphonate EMS in the Chinese Hamster Ovary CHO cell line as recommended by the United Kingdom Environmental Mutagen Society UKEMS. Our findings which indicate genotoxicity represent a basis for assessing the safety of these extracts for human consumption.
