Abstract

Microsatellites have become the favourite genetic markers used in various fields since they are codominant highly polymorphic and easy to score. One major drawback of microsatellite loci analysis is that the development of these markers is laborious expensive and technically demanding. Here we report the development of six microsatellite repeats in Mystus nemurus using RAPD PCR. Specific primer pairs were designed for each of these six microsatellite repeats. These were then tested for polymorphisms. The results showed that four loci were polymorphic and a dendrogram constructed based on genetic distances obtained from the gene frequency data indicated the phylogenetic relationships among four populations of Mystus nemurus.
