Abstract

During recent years flow cytometry has been established as a valuable tool for plant breeders working on a range of different crops. In this paper the different applications of flow cytometry in oil palm are highlighted. Many related purposes can be identified for flow cytometry: i relative nuclear DNA content and ploidy level ii interspecific interploidy and aberrant crosses iii ploidy level determination after haploidization or polyploidyztion after treatments iv characterization of available plant materials v determination of relative DNA nuclear contents in oil palm pollen and vi estimating pollen viability. The summation of these applications makes flow cytometry a valuable tool for the early prediction of generation competence from tissues characterization of plants and division frequency through the detailed cell cycle analysis.
