Abstract

lntrogressing genes from related species is an promising way by which plant breeders can incorporate novel genetic variation in elite germplasm of crop species. With advances in in vitro techniques it is now possible to hybridize distant species however next level of obstacle is to understand the interaction between introgressed genes and elite genetic backgrounds. Understanding this interaction is especially important when the traits introgressed are quantitatively inherited. Using cotton as a model species we studied the effects of QTLs introgressed from Gossypium barbadense into multiple genetic backgrounds of Upland cotton G. hirsutum. The result suggests that the genetic effects of an introgressed QTL locus could be influenced by genetic backgrounds.
