Moving above and beyond the oil palm genome

Citation

UNSPECIFIED (2011) Moving above and beyond the oil palm genome. [Proceedings Paper]

Abstract

Epigenetics simply refers to changes in phenotype appearance or gene expression caused by specific mechanisms other than changes in the underlying DNA sequence. With the availability of the oil palm genome data we are now in the position to tackle the second genetic code. It is known that the abnormality phenomenon in the oil palm is a consequence of epigenetics. This paper will highlight a novel genome wide microarray approach that has to date been successfully applied to detect DNA methylation alterations in tumours. Loci that are consistently differentially methylated observed through comparative assessment between normal and abnormal palms were identified. These loci will then undergo independent analysis via a quantitative real-time PCR based method. The eventual development of epigenetic biomarkers targeted at mantling and the impact it will have on clonal oil palm industry will be discussed.
