Abstract

Mineralogically T2 terrace soils of Peninsular Malaysia contain kaolinite gibbsite goethite quartz mica chlorite and mixed layers. This is reflected by the surface properties of the soils. pH fluctuates around 4 and the values are lower in the A a soil profile than in the subhorizons. Negative charges are more than positive charges within the pH of 3 to 6. Weathering indices vary from 60 - 80 showing that the soils are either in the recent or intermediate stage of weathering. The buffering action of the soil is controlled by Al below pH 5.5. But above pH 5.5 it is controlled by clays of which kaolinite is the dominant buffering substance
