Abstract

In subsurface horizons of well-drained humid tropical upland soils clay fraction dispersible in water is largely controlled by net charge per 100 g clay. In contrast the clay in topsoils tends to disperse well in virtually all soils independent of charge or weathering stage. Dispersion of positively charged subsoils also controlled by the apparent net charge. All minerals are capable of dispersing regardless of the sign of the net charge. Accumulation of the dispersed clay occurred predominantly or solely through flocculation. The currently used criteria for the recognition of an argillic horizon appear insufficient and inconclusive
