Abstract
Pest management problems concern not only biological and ecological aspects but socio-economic political and management aspects as well. In analysing such complex problems systems analysis plays a key role. Systems analysis is a systematic approach to assist a decision maker choose a course of action by investigating the full problem. Using an appropriate framework the decision makers their objectives and alternatives are identified. By comparing them in the light of their consequences expert judgement and intuition bearing upon the problem can be brought out. As such systems analysis is of practical value in integrated pest management programmes in providing relevant guidelines for policy decisions strategy planning research extension and implementation. In the analysis a pest problem is considered at three main levels: the policy decision level which comprises the government local agricultural authorities and the private bureaucracies; the farm management which comprises to plantation managers and the individual farmers; and the agro-ecosystem which comprises the non-human biotic and abiotic components and factors.
