Ismail Hashim, . and Mohd Ali Sujan, . (1985) Integrated management of diseases and insect pests of Hevea rubber. [Proceedings Paper]
Abstract
The main maladies effecting Havea rubber are fungal diseases while insect pests are of minor importance. The ideal strategy to manage disease and pest problems of rubber is to adopt an integrated approach. Planting of resistant clones in predemarcated disease areas according to enviromax planting recommendation is enconraged. Secondary leaf fall SLF caused by Oidium and Colletotrichum can be avoided by inducing the trees to refoliate during the dry period through artificial defoliation. Similarly Oidium SLF is avoided by judicious nitrogen application. Amendment of sulphur around the planting hole controls root diseases. Proper land clearing and establishment of legume cover further-reduce the incidence of root diseases. Generally rubber trees are not attacked by insect pests on a large scale. The damage caused by insect pests is usually minor though they feed on leaves stems and roots of seedlings and mature rubber trees. The attack may be severe at times but rarely persists or extends over large areas. Chemical control is normally use to overcome epidemic outbreaks of diseases and pests
