Abstract

The coconut palm in Indonesia was attacked by at least ten serious insect pests. Pesticides had been commonly employed to control the pests. However since 1975 there had been a tendency to use biological control agents. Surveys laboratory studies and field trials on biological control agents had been carried out on those considered to be effective such as: Baculovirus orycetes and Metarrhizium anisopliae against Oryctes rhinoceros. There were still many areas to be studied. Rearing procedures for most of the biotic agents require more detailed studies as the failure to carry out mass rearing becomes a limiting factor in implementing biological control of coconut pests.
