Biocontrol of cereal aphids in the United Kingdom by a range of natural enemies

Abstract

Most examples of biological control of insect pests had involved the use of a limited number of natural enemies often only one. However many herbivorous insects were prevented from becoming serious pests or were only sporadic pests due to the combined action of a broad spectrum of natural enemies. Cereal aphid populations on wheat in the United Kingdom did not reach damaging levels every year and accumulating evidence indicated that outbreaks were often prevented by the combined action of a range of natural enemies including predators parasitoids and pathogens. Different elements of the natural enemy complex appeared to have their major impact on the aphid population at different times of the year and the variability of the climate from year to year influenceds the relative importance of different natural enemies.
