Abstract
The oil palm industry produced about 7.2 million tonnes of palm oil mill effluent POME a year. Being an organic waste with a high BOD concentration POME was treated before discharge to conform to strict regulations of the Environmental Quality Act 1974. However through research it was found to be a valuable by-product because of its high nutrient contents. Its application onto land had been shown to be beneficial to crops. The effort was to fully utilise POME as a fertilizer substitute. This paper reviewed the various system of land application of POME currently adopted by the industry and the effects of POME application on soil properties environment and crop performance
