Mohd Yusof Hussein, . (1985) Training needs for implementation of integrated pest management programmes in Malaysia. [Proceedings Paper]
Abstract
Implementation of integrated pest management IPM is an important component of most agricultural production systems. Experience and case studies reported in other countries where IPM has become a practical reality indicate that not only is a suitable pest management system required in Malaysia but more critical is a team of well-trained pest management personnel. This paper deals with the training needs in IPM in Malaysia with special reference to the role of universities and other semi-government and government bodies. One of the areas which needs greater emphasis is liberalizing the educational system in schools and universities. There is a continuing need for non-degree training for pest management personnel to familiarize and keep abreast with the concept philosophies and progress in IPM. Degree-level training for the undergraduates and post-graduates emphasizing a thorough understanding of ecological relationship as it relates to the management of pests and a period of internship particularly at Master and Ph.D levels is proposed. The training in IPM of under-graduates enrolled for the B. Ag. Sc. programme at Universiti Pertanian Malaysia and of pest management personnel employed by various government agencies is also discussed.
