Abstract

Xanthan an exocellular microbial polysaccharide was fermentatively synthesised using Xanthomonas campestris NRRL B 1459 and indigenous low cost raw materials. Carbon sources like hydrolysed tapioca starch 2 gave higher yields than equivalent amounts of pretreated cane molasses or gur. Of the new nitrogenous agricultural by-products tested as raw materials at 0.5 w/v level the oilseed cakes of neem castor sesame cotton and groundnut gave higher yields than corn steep liquor rice bran blood meals. The pyruvate content of xanthan from sago and oil seed cakes fermentations was over 4 while it was below 3 with molasses indicating a higher quality in the former case
