Abstract

The anaerobic digestion process has been shown to be the most efficient energy conversion system as the products are in the form of methane gas which can be utilised directly. It is widely used for the stabilization of municipal waste water sludges. It is currently gaining acceptance as a useful method for the treatment of high strength industrial wastes. The most important factors are pH and alkalinity temperature nutrient requirements inhibition and toxicity. Process operation parameters such as retention time organic loading and feed composition play a vital role in enhancing the gas produciton rate and as well as in reducing the pollutional load of the waste material. Results showed that gas production of 1.72 m3/day peak value was obtained using 1:1 mixture of chicken manure and cowdung at 9 total solids concentration. In contrast test using 1.1 mixture of chicken manure and cowdung separately produced only 1.073 and 0.96 m3/day respectively
