Abstract

Accumulation of nitrogen in the roots started in October bark and wood of the main roots and November small roots and still coninued in midwinter increasing until January small roots and wood and late February bark. The nitrogen levels in bark and wood of the main roots then leveled off notably during bud break and leafing-out whilst during the same period those in small roots increased slightly. During bud break and leafing-out the application of sample spring nitrogen fertilizer raised the levels of nitrogen in both main and small roots appreciably. The results are discussed in relation to tree growth in winter and storage and metabolism of nitrogen in the tree during the winter and new growth in spring
