Abstract
Malaysia is currently the world's leading producer and exporter of palm oil. The tremendous increase of this sector of the plantation industry is attributable to the government's policy on crop diversification programme launched during the 1960s and enhanced by other factors such as the availability of high yielding planting materials good planting management and technology advancement accompanied by the favourable local climatic and soil conditions. The production of crude palm oil CPO and palm kernel oil PKO over the last two decades as shown in Table 1 and Table 2 respectively were due to the expansion of palm oil area from 55 000 hectares in 1960 to 1.3 million hectares in 1983 Table 3. Fifty three percent of the total area of oil palm are developed by private estates 41 percent by government agencies and 6 percent by independent smallholders. Currently Malaysia produces 57 percent of the total world production of palm oil and 8.8 percent of the total world supply of oils and fats. At the same time it accounts for about 73 percent of world palm oil and 17.0 percent of world oils and fats exports. This commodity and its products contribute approximately 10 percent of the country's Gross Domestic Product in 1983.
