Abstract

An integrated pest management IPM programme for paddy was formulated and implemented in two localities in the Tanjung Karang Irrigation Scheme adopt more desirable management practices in their cultivation activities to avoid the constant threat of pests to their crop. Guided by certain know factors several strategies were carried out in relation to known theories and concepts in the process of promoting the change. Analysis showed that the activities carried out during the implementation process failed to consider the perception of the farmers involved in the problems. Farmers were not ready to accept the problems pointed out to them as relevant to their own situation. As such the programme was unable to induce commitment participation and trust of farmers to succesfully adopt the desired practices. The entire activities carried out concentrated on exposing the farmers to the information which they might not be ready to accept as relevent to them. This paper attempts to suggest recommendations for futures programmes to ensure greater success in changing the farmer's existing pest management practices in line with the IPM programme objectives.
