This paper provided an overview of the types and uses of traditional rattan handicrafts found in Malaysia. It proceeded to identify the problems facing the industry today describes the position and attituded of the artisans and offered suggestions on how these problems could be overcome through the concerted efforts of product development and the upgrading of skills and marketing. The role of the policymaker was also identified as an important factor in fostering the growth and development of the industry. The overview is based primarily on observations and not deduced from empirical studies. This was because of a lack of data available on rattan handicrafts
