Norton G.A., . (1985) Economic considerations in IPM integrated pest management programmes. [Proceedings Paper]
Abstract
The successful implementation of intergrated pest management IPM depends on a number of factors at the farm village regional and national level. Although extension activities may be able to overcome certain constraints to implementation unless the IPM package is initially designed to meet the most important of these criteria no amount of extension effort will archieve a successful result. This paper concentrates on the economic aspects involved in disigning appropriate IPM programmes. Two important areas are discussed: the economic threshold concept and the design of improved standard operating procedures. In attempting to clarify the principles associated with adaptive pest management programmes the concepts of economic threshold optimal strategy and action threshold are brought together with the aim of providing a rigorous and practical approach. Since adaptive pest management is often not feasible and not regarded by the farmer as the best strategy improvements in IPM have to be achieved by changing standard operating procedure. It is concluded that more emphasis on this design aspect of IPM is needed in the future
