Wong T. H., . and Sim S.L., . (1986) Effect of cover plants on early growth and yield of pepper Piper nigrum L. [Proceedings Paper]
Abstract
The suitability of two legume species Desmodium ovalifolium and Centrosema pubescens as cover plants in the inter-row areas of pepper vines was assessed together with natural regrowth and clean weeding. Compared with clean weeding all the cover plant treatments had no adverse effect on growth of pepper during the immature period. However in the first year of berry production natural regrowth exerted a depressive effect on yield of pepper and can be considered an undesirable cover under the conditions imposed in this trial. In contrast vines growth with leguminous cover plants gave an average yield increase of about 16 over that of clean weeding.
