Abstract

Coconut oil was an essential raw material for the production of oleochemicals and with the increasing cost of petroleum coconut oil was expected to become more important. Together with other oils and fats coconut oil was an important source of natural glycerine giving a greater yield than other commonly used oleochemical raw materials. Coconut oil was a major requirement in fatty acids production and this paper outlined the splitting distillation and fractionation processes used. A particular outlet for coconut oil was as a raw material for the fatty alcohols and the methyl esters that were an essential base for detergent manufactured. With their superior lathering properties the C12 and C14 chains derived from coconut oil were in demand as a constituent for toilet soap production. The paper also lists applications of the capric caprylic lauric and myristic alkyl chains derived from coconut oil
