Tissue culture of Cocos nucifera - biochemical changes preceding embryogenesis

Abstract

In developing methods for the clonal propagation of selected coconut palms using tissue culture techniques a reproducible method for initiating and maintaining coconut callus was developed. The first palm to differentiate from the cultures was now firmly established in soil. This paper discussed the comparisons between the events which occur in coconut callus and those which occur during somatic embryogenesis of other selected palm species. It also explained the use of probes for embryogenic markers in order to monitor differentiation events. The main areas in which further research was necessary can be exploited fully were identified as: Initiating morphogenetic changes in the callus cultures and obtaining plants with balanced root and shoot systems
