Abstract

Black pod and stem canker occurred in all the major cocoa-growing areas in Sarawak. It was confirmed that Phytophtora palmivora was the causal agent. Pods from hybrids of UITI x SCA12 NA32 x UITI and PA35 x NA32 were less susceptible to infection. Fungicide metalaxyl at 0.06 a.i. active ingredient and fentin-acetate 54 plus maned 18 at 0.1 a.i. significantly reduced pod infection. Pink disease Corticium salmonicolor was serious in cocoa under coconut in coastal areas. Field evaluation of fungicides showed that tridemorph and cuprous oxide at 0.2 a.i. spray application significantly reduced disease index. Vascular streak dieback was recorded in Sarawak in 1978. Field trials 1978-83 showed that when the fertilizer application rate for the affected cocoa was at 132.7 g N: 81.7 g P2 O5: 176.9 g K2O: 22.7 g MgO per tree per annum the infection was reduced to 1.7 on tree counts two years later
