Abstract
The main pepper variety planted in Sarawak is the Kuching variety popular for its high yield. This variety is susceptible to specific strains of Phytophthora palmivora and the crop suffered tremendously due to the monoclone system of planting. The first attempt to screen resistant pepper seedlings from an open-pollinated variety began in early 1979 and 1980 where 1200 seedlings were inoculated with Phytophthora palmivora. By the end of 1980 nine seedlings appeared to be resistant to different strains of the fungus. These nine seedlings were transplanted to the field for further evaluation of agronomic traits. The plants started fruiting in 1985 and these materials should be released as breeding stocks for subsequent evaluation.
