Abstract

In Sarawak an intensive method of pepper cultivation is practised by smallholders. Under this system yields are relatively high but the costs of production are also substantial. Soil physical characteristics have a marked influence on yield of pepper. Various agro-management practices can be adopted to minimise or ameliorate the soil physical limitations. Present recommendations in respect of some of the cultural practices are discussed in detail. Pepper is planted on soils of inherently low fertility adequate applications of fertilizers are essential for rapid growth and sustained high yields. Investigations into the nutritional aspects have provided guidelines on the fertilizer requirements of this crop particularly when grown on shale derived soils of clay to clay loam texture. To improve the efficiency of fertilizer usage it is suggested that soil type manurial history age of vine and cropping level should be taken into consideration for the formulation of fertilizer recommendations. Further investigations into cover crops planting densities and systems genotype-environment interactions pepper supports and fertilizer needs in relation to plant and environmental factors are proposed.
