Abstract

The earliest clonal trials established in 1972 were the clonal trials at Site B and Site C at Malaysian Agriculture and Research Institute MARDI Jerangau. Five clones had been released as new varieties from the two trials. These clones were 1C 9C 46B 49B and 53B and are named as Klon Koko MARDI KKM 1 2 5 6 and 7 respectively. Two clonal trials at MARDI Hilir Perak Malaysia were established in 1978. Materials used for the trials were selected from progeny trials at MARDI Jerangau from the Brazilian and Costa Rican progeny trials Kuala Bernam Estate selections and Felda Sungai Tekam selections. Results indicated that selections from within the progeny trials at MARDI Jerangau were more promising than those selected at Hilir Perak or Kuala Bernam Estate and Felda Sungai Tekam. From within these two clonal trials a few clones were potentially promising and were recommended for planting in certain parts of Malaysia. Majority of the clones selected from the Brazilian and Costa Rican populations were good pod producers but the bean size was below 0.90 g/bean. Jerangau selections were more tolerant to vascular streak dieback disease. Promising clones from within the four clonal trials were being transferred to other areas for further clonal trials
