Abstract

To evaluate the vigour of wild cocoa genotypes collected by the London Cocoa Trade Amazon Project LCTAP in the Amazon Region of Ecuador stem diameters of 405 trees from 52 collections were measured at 90-day intervals over a period of 2 years. An average growth rate for each collection was calculated by fitting an exponential growth function to the data for the first year. During the second year there was a reduction in growth rate for which the exponential model was unsatisfactory. Growth rates for the collections showed a continuous approximately normal distribution in the range 0.0018 to 0.0032 mm/mm/day. There were statistically significant differences among the collections and also between trees within collections. The calculated growth rates were used to rank the collections in order of vigour. This ranking was intended to aid breeders in the selection of material from the LCTAP collection
