Abdul Kadir Haji Din, . (1987) Upland tourism and its consequences in Peninsular Malaysia. [Proceedings Paper]
Abstract
This paper examines the genesis growth and consequences of upland tourism in Malaysia. It is suggested that leisure-oriented tourism started in the hills during the early colonial period. Salubrious ambience in the hills provided expatriates with ready substitutes for the temperate environments of their motherlands. When expatriates left during the war years upland tourism experienced a drop in popularity. The attractiveness of hill resorts was resuscitated later in the 1970's and in the l980's considerable concern was expressed about certain socioecological consequences. These consequences and their implications on upland tourism development are discussed.
