Chunkao K., . (1987) Impact of forest alteration in mountainous watershed of Northern Thailand on water flow and quality. [Proceedings Paper]
Abstract
An investigation has been conducted in two representative areas at Kog-Ma natural hill-evergreen forest and Fung Jaw human settlement altered forest area in Chiangmai northern Thailand during the period of July 1979 to June 1983. Two 120 degrees-V-notch weirs with recording staff gauges and climatic stations were installed in both areas. Water samples were taken every second week and their physical chemical and biological qualities analysed. The results showed that Kog-Ma natural hill-evergreen forest watershed contributed str1198eamflow of about 1 452 000 m3/km2/yr while the altered forest area of Tung Jaw human settlement showed annual flow of only 678 500 m3/km2/yr. Alteration of natural hill-evergreen forest to become human settlement caused a decrease in physical water qualities by increasing the pH color electrical conductivity hardness and turbidity by contamination with heavy metals Hg Pb and Cd and organochlorine pesticide residues. More counts of coliform bacteria were recorded in the stream water of Tung Jaw human settlement than that of Kog-Ma hill-evergreen forest waters
