Vigus T.R., . (1987) Plantation forestry in the Papua Guinea highlands: the Wahgi swamps afforestation scheme. [Proceedings Paper]
Abstract
The paper discusses the Waghi Swamps afforestation scheme which has successfully converted a large area of unproductive swampland into a productive forest. In so doing the pressure on the remaining rainforest in the Western Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea is alleviated as the products from the swamp plantations substitute for those mostly firewood and poles for building originally obtained from it. The scheme is not without its problems however and these are also discussed.
