Abstract

A large proportion of the flat and gently-sloping land in Malaysia has been cleared of forest. Further expansion of agricultural land will inevitably encroach the steeply-sloping uplands. Some of these steep areas are in fact already being cultivated with rubber and other crops usually with bench terracing to minimise soil erosion. A study in an upland area in Terengganu showed that under bare surface conditions soil erosion can range from 10 000 kg/ha to 14 000 kg/ha for an 8-month period September 84 - April 85. Under a1030cocoa crop erosion is considerably influenced by slope soil and surface conditions. Extremely poor soil such as 'skeletal soils' which are common in the uplands are associated with relatively poor growth of cocoa. However many cultural practices have been adapted to suit various environmental conditions. These different practices are highlighted and discuss
