Preliminary observations on the effects of logging on a hill forest in Sabah

Abstract

Preliminary results regarding logging damage in Research Plot 467 near Keningau are presented. Damaged covered both the soil and vegetation. Some 12.42 per cent of the area was bared by tractor tracks which averaged 207 m/ha. About 43 per cent of dipterocarp stems above 10 cm dbh were damaged by selective logging which removed 54 cu. m/ha. Logging increased fire hazard by leaving 66 cu. m/ha of the 120 cu. m/ha of wood felled on the forest floor as fuel. The residual stocking would need 70 years or more to yield 15 trees per ha in the next harvest. Shorter cutting cycles are possible if treatments are carried out and/or if more species become merchantable. More detailed studies are needed.
