Abstract

A study on the possibility of forming a protective film around strawberry Fragaria x ananassa Duchesne cv. Ostara to determine the effectiveness of postharvest dipping on the fruit storage quality was carried out. Primary fruits were dipped into four different emulsions namely Prolong Clarital Mobilcer C and S-6000 at various concentrations 0 1 2 and 4 percent and stored at both ambient conditions 20 /- 1 degrees C; 70 /- 5 percent relatively humidity and cold storage 2 /- 1 degrees C; 90 /- 5 percent relatively humidity. Results obtained indicate that storage quality of treated strawberries deteriorated much more P 0.001 in ambient conditions to that of fruits in cold storage. Prolong treated fruits were found to lose moisture much more P 0.001 than fruits dipped in other antitranspirants while S-600 gave the best performance in terms of retaining their surface glossiness. Concentrations much above 1 percent and 2 percent would give a negative effect in fruit moisture loss and surface glossiness when kept in ambient conditions and cold storage respectively.
