Abstract

The water extract of nutmeg when given intraperitoneally at a dose of 1g/kg was shown to have strong anti-inflammatory effect on two models of acute inflammation in rats: the carrageenin-induced oedema and the serotonin-induced oedema. The aqueous extract was also shown to have irritant property. Irritants can exert anti-inflammatory effect through 'counter-irritant' mechanism. The results do not demonstrate that the ability of the aqueous extract to reduce inflammation is entirely due to its irritancy and the possibility cannot be ruled out that the anti-inflammatory effect is due to both counter-irritancy and other mechanisms of action.
