Abstract

Mussel culture Perna viridis is considered to be a recent activity in Malaysia. Spat collection and grow-out activities are at the moment concentrated in Selat Tebrau Johor and the Fisheries Research Institute Malaysia is currently carrying out research on the transplanting of spats to new areas like Batu Maung Pulau Pinang Kuala Ibai Terengganu Pulau Lumut and Pulau Ketam Selangor to increase production of mussels and also to enhance new spatial areas in the vicinity. The mean size of spats transplanted were between 29.0 mm to 32.4 mm and the average weight of a collector was about 10 kg. The spats attained marketable size in about 5 -6 months when the size range was between 62.0 mm to 72.8 mm and the weight range of a rope was between 30.7 kg to 42.6 kg. Presently the marketing of mussels wet form is limited only to areas near the culture sites.
