Effect of partial replacement of fish meal by soybean meal in the diet of Oreochromis niloticus

Feeding trials were run at Kanagawa International Fisheries Training Centre KIFTC Yokosuka City Japan. Experiments were conducted to determine the effect of partial replacement of fish meal by soybean meal on the growth and feed efficiency of Oreochromis niloticus. The best growth rate in-terms of percent weight gain was observed in fish fed with diet A 0 percent soybean followed by diet B 20 percent soybean diet C 40 percent soyean and diet D 60 percent soybean whose values were 125.9 percent 111.1 percent 104.9 percent and 103.3 percent respectively P 0.01. A replacement of more than 20 percent fish meal by soybean meal resulted in deficiency of amino acids especially methionine and digestible energy. It was concluded that supplementation of certain amino acids and oil is necessary to obtain a better diet especially for the feeds C and D which had higher than 20 percent soybean.
