Abstract
Several trials on the intensive culture of Penaeus monodon were conducted since the end of 1985. The results obtained with a stocking density of 31 prawn larvae/m2 and using an imported commercial prawn feed were rather encouraging with average survival above 70 percent and an extrapolated production of about 4.5 tons/ha/culture cycle. In contrast the performance of Gelang Patah GP feed was poor in terms of growth. However in 1987 much improvement was achieved in GP feed which together with a higher stocking density of 65/m2 resulted in an extrapolated production of about 7.8 tons/ha/culture cycle. It is interesting to note that with increase in stocking density from 31/m2 to 60/m2 the survival rate was reduced by half from 80 percent to 40 percent. This might imply that an optimum standing crop may be reached and this was determined to be 24/m2 after several trials. In regard to this the response of yield to feed and stocking density is discussed.
