Abstract

Use of empty fruit bunches EFB of oil palm for direct field mulching is problematic due to their weight and volume and difficult distribution during rainy seasons. Composting of EFB with various additives for a period of about 3 months gave significant volume and weight deduction. Nursery trials on applying the sludge treated EFB compost on selected ornamental plants cocoa and oil palm seedlings was able to offset about half the normal rate of fertilizers with adverse effects.
